Acne can be difficult to handle. Not only is handling it a problem but it also diminishes one’s self-esteem and confidence. Many try over the counter drugs, however, we need to understand that all of our skins are different and therefore require different prescriptions. Here is a list of five successful prescribed treatments for different types of acne.
- Topical antibiotics: Dermatologists often prescribe an antibiotic like clindamycin. Dapsone is a newer alternative that’s applied as a standalone therapy. These gels and lotions can reduce flare-ups in as soon as a few days.
- Retinoids: These creams and gels are known for their skin-clearing powers and can take two to three months to work. The original tropical retinoid is Retin A. It also improves fine lines, texture, and tone.
- Oral antibiotics: Popular pills are known as minocycline and doxycycline. They are very effective, however, they can bring side effects. Which includes either an upset stomach and yeast infections.
- Birth Control: If hormones are the main cause of your acne, a birth-control pill reduces the level of androgens, lowering breakouts.
- Spironolactone: This is a diuretic, which means that it will cause you to pee more than usual. It acts as a hormone regulator but it was initially created to reduce blood pressure. Patients usually given this pill are put under a three-month trial. It helps reduce acne along the jawline, neck area, and chest.
